“Let me get this straight.” Dad pauses near the window, glancing out at the backyard. “You killed our lawyer because of Shaw.”

“Technically…” Dane risks pausing him. Dad’s been attentively listening to us for the last hour, never interfering. He hates to be interrupted when it’s his turn at the figurative podium. “Wexler and Braxton appointed her our go-to.”

Because I whole-heartedly believe it, I add, “Wexler deserved what he got.”

My addition to the conversation gets Dad to swirl around. “I’m not debating whether or not the asshole deserved his own death.” He reaches for the bloody papers on the sofa. “And if he had something to do with the accident, I would have killed him myself, but doing this without my approval…” He pauses, his voice still at a normal decibel. “Do you know how much collateral we are talking about at the dealership?” He doesn’t wait for us to answer. “Even with the insurance payout, we have to pay the city the damage. You caused a freaking blackout that they are still fixing. And you’re lucky no one died. You could have killed me and your sister.”

“You weren’t supposed to be there,” Dane growls.

“That was your bright idea?” Dad drops the papers on his desk with gusto. Impersonating Dane, he jabs his finger against Dane’s forehead. “Hard skull doesn’t make you bulletproof. At any point, with all those brain cells you claim to have, did you stop to think of the consequences?”

“I did, yes,” Dane deadpans, much to the dismay of my father. “And you and Gia were not supposed to be there. No one was. It would—”

My father slaps both hands together with such force my head throbs. “Your mouth moves, but your tongue just keeps shoveling a hole.” He shakes his head. “Your thought process was ‘let me blow up my dealership because no one is going to be there’!” Any modicum of calmness has evaporated into the intense air around us. I bet Gia can hear Dad shouting in her room. “How did I get cursed with dumb and dumber as children?”

Dane taps on his thigh, flicking between his thumb and his pinkie, biding his time. No point in arguing when Dad’s livid. His comprehension is directly proportional to the amount of red on his face. The redder, the angrier, and the less information he retains.

“You!” Dad switches over to me, directly addressing me with a growl. “You, I expect this kind of foolish shit from, but not from Dane. I’m highly disappointed in both of you.”

Dane chooses the wrong time to inject himself into the conversation. Dad’s anger usually comes in waves, each one worse than the last. “Dad—”

“Shut the fuck up!” Dad points at him. “When I’m ready to talk to you and address your stupid decisions, I will give you the permission to speak.”

Dane shuts up and eyes me, urging me to bite my tongue until Dad calms down. Nothing we say when he’s heated will go over well.

“Sons of Sindicato,” he harrumphs. “You disgrace the name, especially you.
