âLet me get this straight.â Dad pauses near the window, glancing out at the backyard. âYou killed our lawyer because of Shaw.â
âTechnicallyâ¦â Dane risks pausing him. Dadâs been attentively listening to us for the last hour, never interfering. He hates to be interrupted when itâs his turn at the figurative podium. âWexler and Braxton appointed her our go-to.â
Because I whole-heartedly believe it, I add, âWexler deserved what he got.â
My addition to the conversation gets Dad to swirl around. âIâm not debating whether or not the asshole deserved his own death.â He reaches for the bloody papers on the sofa. âAnd if he had something to do with the accident, I would have killed him myself, but doing this without my approvalâ¦â He pauses, his voice still at a normal decibel. âDo you know how much collateral we are talking about at the dealership?â He doesnât wait for us to answer. âEven with the insurance payout, we have to pay the city the damage. You caused a freaking blackout that they are still fixing. And youâre lucky no one died. You could have killed me and your sister.â
âYou werenât supposed to be there,â Dane growls.
âThat was your bright idea?â Dad drops the papers on his desk with gusto. Impersonating Dane, he jabs his finger against Daneâs forehead. âHard skull doesnât make you bulletproof. At any point, with all those brain cells you claim to have, did you stop to think of the consequences?â
âI did, yes,â Dane deadpans, much to the dismay of my father. âAnd you and Gia were not supposed to be there. No one was. It wouldââ
My father slaps both hands together with such force my head throbs. âYour mouth moves, but your tongue just keeps shoveling a hole.â He shakes his head. âYour thought process was âlet me blow up my dealership because no one is going to be thereâ!â Any modicum of calmness has evaporated into the intense air around us. I bet Gia can hear Dad shouting in her room. âHow did I get cursed with dumb and dumber as children?â
Dane taps on his thigh, flicking between his thumb and his pinkie, biding his time. No point in arguing when Dadâs livid. His comprehension is directly proportional to the amount of red on his face. The redder, the angrier, and the less information he retains.
âYou!â Dad switches over to me, directly addressing me with a growl. âYou, I expect this kind of foolish shit from, but not from Dane. Iâm highly disappointed in both of you.â
Dane chooses the wrong time to inject himself into the conversation. Dadâs anger usually comes in waves, each one worse than the last. âDadââ
âShut the fuck up!â Dad points at him. âWhen Iâm ready to talk to you and address your stupid decisions, I will give you the permission to speak.â
Dane shuts up and eyes me, urging me to bite my tongue until Dad calms down. Nothing we say when heâs heated will go over well.
âSons of Sindicato,â he harrumphs. âYou disgrace the name, especially you.
